A new book, Under Caesar's Sword: How Christians Respond to Persecution (Cambridge, 2018), edited by Daniel Philpott and Timothy Samuel Shah, investigates how Christians respond to persecution. Scholars from around the world present research on instances of persecution. Their findings lay out the nature of persecution, reasons for it, responses both nonviolent and confrontational, and the effects of these responses. The book is part of the Cambridge Studies in Law and Christianity series, which is edited by John Witte, Jr.
Philpott is Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame. Shah is Director for International Research at the Religious Freedom Research Project of the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs at Georgetown University. He is also Research Professor of Government at Baylor University's Institute for Studies of Religion and Senior Director of the South and Southeast Asia Action Team with the Religious Freedom Institute.
