Chapman and McConnell Book Talk on Agreeing to Disagree |

On Monday, September 12, CSLR welcomed a collection of students, faculty, and the greater Emory community to an event celebrating the publication of Agreeing to Disagree: How the Establishment Clause Protects Religious Diversity and Freedom of Conscience (Oxford 2023). After welcoming remarks from Whittney Barth, John Witte Jr. introduced the co-authors Michael W. McConnell, Richard and Frances Mallery Professor and Director of the Constitutional Law Center at Stanford Law School, and Nathan S. Chapman, McDonald Distinguished Fellow and Brock Professor of Law at University of Georgia.  

Following their introductory remarks, Professor McConnell and Professor Chapman engaged in a conversation that mapped out the central arguments on the establishment clause presented in the book, alongside various historical and contemporary pieces of jurisprudence.  

After a productive round of questions from the audience, the event concluded with a small reception. As part of this event, a small group of undergraduate students were invited for a substantive conversation over dinner to discuss the book, the climate of productive discourse on sensitive topics, and meet other members of the CSLR community.
