Dana Lloyd Gives 2025 Overton and Lavona Currie Lecture |

On March 5, 2025, the Center for the Study of Law and Religion was pleased to host students, faculty, and members of the greater Emory community for the 2025 Overton and Lavona Currie Lecture featuring Dr. Dana Llyod. Dr. Lloyd is an assistant professor in the Department of Global Interdisciplinary Studies and affiliated faculty with Center for Peace and Justice Education at Villanova University. During the lecture, Dr. Lloyd, discussed her latest book Land as Kin: Religious Freedom and Indigenous Sovereignty in Yurok Country (University Press of Kansas 2023). Her work asks: Is the framework of religious freedom suitable for the protection of Native American sacred lands? The book draws heavily on Lloyd’s work with the Yurok Tribe of Northern California, following their ongoing struggle for tribal justice and healing. The Currie Lecture Series was founded by Overton and Lavona Currie in 1986. Since its inception, the Currie Lecture in law and religion has been one of the CSLR’s most distinguished forums. Speakers have included President Jimmy Carter, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, John C. Noonan of the United States Court of Appeals, and many other distinguished scholars and practitioners.The Currie lectures are devoted to the continuance of the important conversations at the intersection of law and religion.
