Associate Professor of Middle Eastern Studies, The University of Texas at Austin

Hina Azam is the Associate Professor of Middle Eastern Studies, The University of Texas at Austin. Azam’s research and teaching interests include Islamic jurisprudence, theology, exegesis, hadith studies, women/sexuality and Islam, and sexual violence in Islamic law. She is co-book review editor for the Journal of Law and Religion, published by Cambridge Journals in partnership with the Center for the Study of Law and Religion at Emory University.

She is the author of Sexual Violation in Islamic Law: Substance, Evidence, and Procedure (Cambridge University Press, 2015), which won the 2016 James Henry Breasted Prize from the American Historical Association. She has published several chapters, journal articles, and book reviews.

She was a lecturer in Islamic Studies at St. Mary’s College and Anderson Visiting Instructor in Religious Studies at Stanford University.

Azam holds a doctorate and a master of arts in Islamic Studies from Duke University and a bachelor of arts in philosophy and communication from Loyola College.
