Timothy Shah is Director for International Research, Religious Freedom Research Project, Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs, Georgetown University. Shah is a political scientist specializing in religious freedom as well as in the broad relationship between religious and political dynamics in theory, history, and contemporary practice. His research interests include religious freedom, religion and international relations, and history of Christianity. In addition to his appointment at Georgetown, he is Research Professor of Government, Institute for Studies of Religion, Baylor University. He is co- author with Monica Duffy Toft and Daniel Philpott of God’s Century: Resurgent Religion and Global Politics (W.W. Norton & Company, 2011), co-editor with Daniel Philpott of Under Caesar's Sword: How Christians Respond to Persecution (Cambridge University Press, 2018) and co-editor with Jack Friedman of Homo Religiosus? Exploring the Roots of Religion and Religious Freedom in Human Experience (Cambridge University Press, 2018).

He previously was associate director of the Berkley Center's Religious Freedom Project, director for international research of the center's Religious Freedom Research Project, and an associate professor of the practice of religion and global politics at Georgetown University.

Shah received an artium baccalaureus, magna cum laude, in 1992 and a doctorate in 2002, both from Harvard University.
